The walk to the lake
The USFS gives the distance from the trailhead to Mirror Lake as 1.9 miles with 460 feet of elevation gain, so the out-and-back walk to the water is about 3.8 miles before the lakeside loop is added. That loop runs about 0.4 to 0.5 mile, depending on which USFS document is read. Across its whole length, from the trailhead to the ridge above the lake, the trail spans roughly 3,500 to 4,900 feet of elevation, per the USFS trail guide. The trailhead since 2018
The present trailhead is a newer one. The USFS states that “a new parking lot and plaza area was finished in the fall of 2018”, 0.4 mile west of Government Camp on US-26. Descriptions written before then may refer to the earlier arrangement, so the USFS page is the reference for where to park. Government Camp itself sits at about 4,000 feet, where US-26 reaches its highest point on Mount Hood (Travel Portland). Salmon-Huckleberry, not Mount Hood Wilderness
Mirror Lake lies in the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness, according to the USFS, not in the Mount Hood Wilderness that covers the upper mountain. The difference matters for paperwork. The free, self-issued wilderness permits that the USFS requires from May 15 to October 15 are described on Mount Hood Wilderness trail pages such as Ramona Falls and the Timberline Trail; for Mirror Lake, the signs at the trailhead and the USFS page set the rule. On to Tom Dick & Harry
Past the lake, the trail keeps climbing to the ridge of Tom Dick & Harry Mountain. The USFS trail guide puts the ridge 3.8 miles one way from the trailhead and the top of the range at about 4,900 feet. It also warns that the last section is “much rougher and narrower”, with the final 200 yards very steep and rocky. The extension roughly doubles the one-way distance of the lake walk, and the added climb comes after the lake rather than before it, so a walker can decide at the shore whether to continue.
Passes through the year
The trailhead has two seasons for parking, per the USFS Mirror Lake Sno-Park Trailhead page:
- May to October: a Recreation Pass, meaning the day-use fee, an annual Northwest Forest Pass or an Interagency pass. The USFS Mirror Lake page states that the “Northwest Forest pass and Interagency pass is accepted in lieu of day use fee”.
- November 1 to April 30: an Oregon Sno-Park permit.
The rule differs a few miles away. At Trillium Lake the USFS accepts only the Northwest Forest Pass in lieu of the day-use fee, and the Interagency pass is not accepted there. The Trillium Lake page explains that exception. Current pass options are on the USFS passes page.
Conditions and closures
Trail status on Mount Hood changes with storms, snow and fire. Wildfires closed a number of trails on the east side of the mountain in late summer 2026; check the Mt. Hood National Forest alerts page before setting out. Mirror Lake is on the US-26 side of the mountain, near Government Camp, but the alerts page is still the place to confirm the trail and the road before leaving. The trailhead is a Sno-Park from November 1 to April 30, and the best time to hike page sets out the season windows the USFS publishes for the higher trails.
Mirror Lake and the day tours
None of the six GetYourGuide products lists a stop at Mirror Lake. The closest to a walk on the mountain is the Portland: Mt. Hood Day Tour, whose listing gives 30 minutes at Timberline Lodge and Ski Area for “free time, hiking, self-guided tour”, inside an 8.5-hour day that also stops at Multnomah Falls, Hood River, Rowena Crest and Packer Orchards. That is a short stroll near the lodge, not the Mirror Lake Trail. A visitor who wants this hike drives to the trailhead. The hiking tours page explains why no bookable product is a guided hike.
The trailhead lot is right beside US-26, 0.4 mile west of Government Camp, so the pass rule on the day of the visit (Recreation Pass or Sno-Park permit) can be checked against the calendar before leaving Portland.
