Best Time to Hike
Summer: July to September
The USFS gives "July - October" as the season for the Timberline Trail, and the same window fits the other high routes. The USFS notes that Cloud Cap Road, the approach to Cooper Spur, is "usually snowed out ... until late June or July", and that McNeil Point is "a high-elevation trail and can take a long time to melt out ... often through June".
Wildflowers follow the melt. The USFS says the alpine flowers on Cooper Spur are "buried under snow for the better part of the year" and bloom in late summer. Hiking guides place the Paradise Park meadows in August. The day hikes page lists the trails.
Summer is also the season of the Magic Mile Sky Ride at Timberline, and of Palmer summer skiing, which Timberline runs from June through August.
Autumn: October
October still falls within the USFS season for the high trails, and many Recreation Pass requirements run to October 31. Wilderness permits are required until October 15. Some services close earlier: Lost Lake Resort’s 2026 season ended on October 10, and the Magic Mile was closed for the season as of late September 2026.
Wildfire season
Late summer is also fire season. In 2026, the Grasshopper Fire on the east side and the Austin and Narrows fires in the Clackamas River district led to closures. Wildfires closed a number of trails on the east side of the mountain in late summer 2026; check the Mt. Hood National Forest alerts page before setting out. Closures can begin or lift within days.
Spring and early summer: the climbing season
The summit climb runs on a different calendar. Mt. Hood Territory gives the best conditions as spring to early summer, and The Mountaineers give May and June for the South Side route. The USFS posts climbing condition reports on Tuesday and Friday mornings "through early summer". In late summer rockfall becomes the primary hazard: in 2026 USFS climbing rangers stated that they "no longer recommend attempting a summit climb in the 2026 season". The climbing page has the route.
For hikers, trail gates open gradually in spring: the Ramona Falls trailhead gate opens on April 1, later if there is snow, and the Trillium Lake vehicle gate is closed from December 1 to April 1, per the USFS. Mirror Lake, at 3,500 to 4,900 ft per the USFS, lies well below the high trails.
Winter: November to April
From November 1 to April 30, an Oregon Sno-Park permit is required at trailheads such as Timberline, Mirror Lake and Trillium Lake, per the USFS. Timberline’s own ski season typically runs from mid-November through late May.
Driving is the main planning issue. US-26 reaches about 4,000 ft at Government Camp, and Oregon’s chain law applies: signs show the current requirement, and vehicles under 10,000 lbs not towing may use traction tires instead of chains, according to ODOT. The Hood River Fruit Loop, a 35-mile drive through orchards and farm stands north of the mountain, is most active from April to October according to Travel Oregon, with cherries from mid-June into July and apples from late August to October. The Fruit Loop page has more.
Tours and the calendar
Several day tours from Portland state their weather policy in the listing: the Mt. Hood Day Tour runs in all weather unless unsafe, the wine tour runs in all weather, and the private tour "Operates in all weather conditions". The Multnomah Falls timed-use permit, which the Mt. For a day at the mountain without driving
In winter the chain law and Sno-Park rules apply to drivers. The Portland: Mt. Hood Day Tour, according to its listing, includes hotel pickup in central Portland and 30 minutes at Timberline Lodge, and runs in all weather unless unsafe, with alternative suggestions rather than refunds for weather cancellations.
