What a Mount Hood tour actually is

Mount Hood rises to 11,240 ft, per the USGS and the USFS (some tour listings print 11,249 ft, a figure from a 1991 survey). It stands about 60 road miles east of Portland, a drive of 70 to 90 minutes via I-84 and US-26 according to Travel Portland. The road tours below do not take the direct route. They head east along the Columbia River Gorge first, stop at waterfalls and in the town of Hood River, then turn south and climb to Timberline Lodge. That loop explains the length of the day: 8 to 9 hours for a visit to the mountain that the listings measure in minutes.

Timberline Lodge is the destination on the mountain for every road tour here. It was built by the WPA, dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on 28 September 1937 and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1977. What none of them is

None of the six is a hike on a named trail or an ascent of the mountain. The USFS puts it plainly: “Mt. Hood is a technical climb - there are no trails to the summit.” Travel above 9,500 ft needs a Mt. Hood Climbing Permit, bought on recreation.gov. The walking that the listings describe is short: the gorge tour’s listing gives a “maximum typical walk distance: ½ mile round trip”, and the day tour’s 30 minutes at Timberline include “free time, hiking”. Guided summit climbs are run by guide services holding USFS special use permits, and they are not sold on GetYourGuide.
