What is required

The permit is bought on recreation.gov, one per climber, as a single-trip 3-day or an annual option; a fee applies and it is required year-round. Climbers register in the Wy’East Day Lodge at Timberline, where registration areas also hand out the required human-waste pack-out bags. The permit page sets out the rules.

What the climb asks of an unguided party

Route-finding in the dark, crampon and ice-axe technique, judging avalanche and rockfall hazard, and turning around in time. The USFS names the Old Chute, the Hogsback, the bergschrund, and the fumarole holes of Devil’s Kitchen and Hot Rocks among the hazard areas. Where guided climbs come from

The USFS outfitters page says there are guides for “summiting the mountain”, working under Forest Service special use permits, and that the forest is not accepting new proposals to guide in the Mount Hood Wilderness. None of the six GetYourGuide products is a guided climb or a guided hike, and guide services are not named here. The guided hiking tours page explains what is and is not bookable.

Trail hikes

The flank trails need no guide. They need a pass or permit instead: a Recreation Pass at many trailheads and a free self-issued Wilderness permit from May 15 to October 15 in the Mount Hood Wilderness. The passes page covers each one.
